In summary: Sugar Beach Events is a private oceanfront estate in Kihei and the most price transparent venue in South Maui. Venue rental is $7,000 midweek or $8,000 on a Friday or Saturday, packages start at $3,600, and the whole operation is in house from catering to the liquor license. The trade off is a strict preferred vendor list and a hard 10pm finish.

The Beachside Package at $3,600 is the most useful published number in South Maui for a small wedding. It covers a one hour oceanfront lawn ceremony for up to 20 guests with an officiant, champagne toast, custom cake, wooden folding chairs, a cake table, four highboys and a planner with two scheduled calls. Very few Maui venues will tell you what that costs before you enquire.

Wine runs $45 to $500 a bottle. Per person catering and bar package prices are not published, and no food and beverage minimum is stated, which is the one significant gap in an otherwise open rate card.

The ceremony is on the lawn, not the sand

Worth being precise about, because it changes the legal picture. The venue’s own package page specifies the ceremony takes place on the oceanfront lawn on the property, not on the public beach in front of it. A ceremony on the sand would fall under Hawaii’s state beach permit rules, with a 30 person cap and a ban on chairs and arches. On the lawn, none of that applies. Read our beach permit guide to see what you would be giving up by moving 40 feet.

Named spaces are The Estate, the Ballroom with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, the Lawn Venue, the Banquet Hall, a Luxury Suite, a Green Room and a Garden Path. Per space capacities are not published.

The rules, which are stricter than most

  • In house catering is required. Outside caterers only from the approved list.
  • Preferred vendor list applies broadly. Anyone not on it needs approval.
  • All alcohol is theirs. The venue holds the liquor license, and you may not bring alcohol in or take it out.
  • Hard timeline. Setup no earlier than 9:00am. Outdoor music off at 8:30pm. Last indoor song 9:45pm. Event over at 10:00pm. Guests out by 10:30pm.
  • Parking is 41 vehicles. Plan shuttles above roughly 80 guests.
  • Payments run 25 percent at booking, 50 percent at 60 days, balance at 30 days. Final headcount at 14 days, menu locked at 14 days, courtesy hold 14 days.

An 8:30pm outdoor music cutoff is early for a wedding. If dancing under the stars is the picture in your head, look closely at whether the indoor ballroom carries that for you, because after 8:30 that is where the party is.

What we could not confirm

We publish what the venue publishes and we say so when a number is missing. These are the gaps on this venue as of our last check, and each one is worth asking about on your first call:

  • Maximum capacity from the venue’s own site. The 300 figure comes from its marketplace listing.
  • Per space capacities for the Ballroom, Lawn and Banquet Hall.
  • The Signature Package price.
  • Any per person catering or bar price. The full menu is published with no prices at all.
  • Whether any food and beverage minimum applies.

Where this fits on Maui

Sugar Beach is the best answer in South Maui for couples who want one company handling venue, food, bar and coordination, and who want to know the price first. If you want a full property you control with your own approved caterer, look at Olowalu Plantation House on the west side. If you want the resort experience, see Wailea and South Maui.
