In summary: Kukahiko Estate is a private oceanfront home on the rugged Makena coastline, owned by multiple generations of the Kukahiko family. It is a genuine alternative to a resort for small weddings, with lava rock shoreline and a kitchen built for catering. It publishes no capacity and no pricing, and bookings run through a single planning company.

What the property actually is

The venue’s own description is worth quoting because it explains the character: the Hawaiian translation for Kukahiko is gathering of the clan, and the property in Makena is owned by many generations of the Kukahiko family. It is a furnished island style home, not a purpose built event space, sitting directly on lava rock shoreline with open Pacific views.

The kitchen is the practical detail that matters. The venue describes it as designed for caterers to prepare exquisite events, which means you are not running a wedding dinner out of a tent with a generator. Resident sea turtles and seasonal whale watching from the property are both cited by the venue.

How booking works

Both the estate’s site and the estate’s dedicated venue page route enquiries to Makena Weddings at 808-879-7149 or aloha@makenaweddings.com, and that company describes itself as coordinating events at the property.

We could not verify whether that arrangement is exclusive. Other Maui planners publish weddings held at Kukahiko Estate, so it may be that Makena Weddings is the primary contact rather than the only permitted coordinator. If you already have a planner you want to work with, ask about this on the first call rather than assuming either way.

One housekeeping note. The domain kukahikoestate.com is a parked page offering the domain for sale and is not the venue. The real site is kukahikoestateweddings.com.

What it costs

Nothing is published. No site fee, no rental fee, no food and beverage minimum, no per person catering rate and no package price appears on the venue’s site, the planner’s site or any listing we checked.

For a private estate of this type on Maui, the comparable published numbers are Olowalu Plantation House at $9,000 to $14,000 for the property depending on day and guest count, and Sugar Beach Events at $7,000 to $8,000. Those are different properties with different terms, so treat them as an order of magnitude rather than a quote. Our cost guide has the wider ranges.

Practical notes

  • Catering is outside catering, using the on site kitchen. No in house requirement is published, and no approved caterer list is published either.
  • The property is a home. Expect residential scale, residential parking and neighbours, which usually means an earlier finish than a resort.
  • The Makena coast is where the state permitted ceremony beaches are. If you want the sand as well as the estate, Makena Cove is minutes away and comes with its own rules.
  • Third party listings give the address as 5034 Makena Rd, Kihei. The venue itself does not publish it, so confirm before sending guests.

What we could not confirm

We publish what the venue publishes and we say so when a number is missing. These are the gaps on this venue as of our last check, and each one is worth asking about on your first call:

  • Maximum capacity, seated or standing. No number is published anywhere.
  • All pricing.
  • The street address from the venue itself.
  • Whether Makena Weddings is the required planner or simply the main contact.
  • Outside vendor policy, noise curfew, and whether anyone can stay on the property overnight.

Last verified 2026-07-31. Capacities, fees and policies change. Confirm directly with the venue before you sign anything.

Where this fits on Maui

Kukahiko is for couples who want a family owned Hawaiian home on the water instead of a hotel ballroom, and who are comfortable with a venue that answers questions by phone rather than on a rate card. If price transparency matters more than character, Sugar Beach Events publishes everything. See the whole region on Wailea and South Maui.
